Forget mere auto shows; the annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and surrounding events on Northern California’s coast rank among the most prestigious places to see the world’s most enticing classic cars. It’s also where many marques use the idyllic backdrop to unveil some of their boldest and most audacious concepts. This year, we saw head-turners from big brands such as Audi, Mercedes-Benz, and Infiniti, plus debuts from boutique automotive houses including Pininfarina and Hennessey. Here are the ones that captured our attention.
Mercedes EQ Silver Arrow Concept
The Mercedes EQ Silver Arrow Concept flies with 738 hp.
The future meets the past with Mercedes-Benz’s all-electric, single-seat concept car unveiled during this year’s Monterey Car Week. The futuristic vehicle is one part homage to the high-speed W 125 racecars of the 1930s and one part showcase for cutting-edge technology. The EQ Silver Arrow employs a pure design from a body of carbon fiber painted in luminous silver to achieve the look of liquid metal, flanked by imposing, multi-spoke wheels in rose gold. The cockpit is furnished in rich wood and aluminum, while a large panoramic screen projects a 3-D image of the driver’s surroundings. The electric power train produces 738 hp and, since it runs silently, Mercedes designers have fitted the EQ concept with optional sounds—including that of a UFO.
